Adolescent Frivolity – The Beginnings of a Senior Thesis
The smells of summertime. Salty island sunsets and old friends. Silly sisters, sillier brother. Love and loss and
growing up. My work is inspired by the places and people I’ve experienced in my twenty-one years. Any time of year can provide this to me, but my soul is saved by the summertime. My anxieties and stresses seem to disappear when I step off the ferry. I see familiar smiling faces, and days alone on my favorite rocky beach. I find my mind to be at peace and open to memorializing moments, saving them for later. I harness these memories and bring them into my work. In Adolescent Frivolity, I am looking at the complexities of these formative years. This time in life is easy in many ways, but difficult and confusing in many others. Frivolity, by definition, is a lack of seriousness. I hope to channel a lightheartedness in color and aesthetics while exploring these years. Incorporating these thoughts into woven work, photography and painting has given me a space to release these moments in time.
