Lasercut Icosahedron Lamp

While I was interning with Biji-Biji, I was tasked with creating some prototypes for a laser cut lamp workshop to be held in conjunction with the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival.

The prototype seen here was designed with versatility in mind. The entire unit could be completed on a single sheet of 24" X 16", 3mm plywood under ten minutes, with minimal off-cut waste. But of course, that didn't mean that usability had to suffer - the icosahedron shape was chosen because it was repetitive and easy to understand, and all pieces were designed to fit snugly without glue.

The simple triangular faces also meant that segments with different patterns and shapes could be produced easily, giving the lamp a completely different look with just minor design adjustments. I chose a mix of two different face designs to illustrate the possibility of this.

I still keep my own prototype - a proud reminder of the fond times I spent with the Biji-Biji crew.
