Red Crown Crane Series

The Red Crowned Crane Series
“The Red Crowned Crane Series” honors a traditional symbol found in certain provinces of China. Cranes symbolize purity. As a Red Crowned Crane takes flight it transports the spirit of the departed to the heavens. Elements of the traditional Chinese crane and clouds perfectly display my family heritage with its tradition of honor and revered service.

I was adopted from the city Yue Yang in the Hunan Province in China when I was six months old by my single mom. Sadly and unexpectedly my mom passed away two years ago from lung cancer. She was the world to me and I wanted to focus my fabric design around her as she was my only direct family. However, I also wanted to display my Chinese culture. After researching traditional Chinese fabrics, paintings, ceramics, and looking at photographs of China for inspiration I learned the Red Crowned Crane was the perfect symbol. The two cranes represent mother and daughter and the single crane represents myself now flying alone. Each of the colors have symbolic meanings too. Chinese believe the color blue represents healing, exploration, trust, calmness, and immortality. Purple symbolizes spiritual awareness, physical and mental healing, hence strength, and abundance. Black signifies immortality, stability, knowledge, adaptability, spontaneity, power, emotional protection. Red is said to bring good luck, happiness, vitality, and long life. Green represents growing, balancing, health, harmony, and sensitivity.
