ONYX CHARM
The Onyx charm is the black sheep amongst its siblings. It can harness the power of scrying, keeps senses and intuition sharp, and can even be used to banish pain. All these at a price though, as it can manifest the darkness, if left unattended. Truly a dual-edged charm.
PHASE 1: CONCEPTUALIZATION
The Onyx charm was meant to be the oddball of the group. We grasped the concept of manipulating darkness to combat darkness, and it very well tunes into this. The charm is rigid and sinister. Somewhere along the line we were somehow stuck in a predicament wherein its just a skull design. Then we managed to add a little iconic (albeit subtle) design. That is now what we see as the metal tears pouring out of the eye sockets. A simple visual that alarms people that something isn't completely right in the charm's essence.
PHASE 2: MODELING
The models required minor sculpting this time for the skull ornament and onyx. You'll also notice some changes overtime up until the final version below.
PHASE 3: TEXTURING AND RENDERING
The texturing was relatively easy to do. Everything is layer based. What's fun about it was when we rendered it for production quality, more minute details appeared that we haven't seen yet within Substance Painter.
The render came out beautifully. The microsurface details is what really sets the tone for this one. From the small dust particles to the scratches and damage. Everything just comes together.
