Psychology Today Magazine Spread

For this project, we had to prepare a magazine spread for an article suitable for publication in Psychology Today. We had to research for an article to use as our basis. I looked on Aeon.co and found an article titled “Why Women Stray” by David Buss. The title is intriguing and piques a reader’s interest.

For the assignment, we had to include a main graphic, a call out quote and a bullet list. I found my photo graph on Adobe Stock. It’s of a woman between 2 men. I included the original photo as well. I felt the photograph pairs well with the topic of the article. I cropped the photo to focus more on the face of the woman. I then duplicated the background layer and applied a Gaussian blur and removed the color from the copy. I applied a layer mask and brushed over the women’s face so it was in focus and color. I then with to the background layer and adjusted the hue/saturation so the women’s face had more color which increased the contrast between her and the men. I wanted to make her the focal point since the article is about women.

I imported the photo into an InDesign layout I created using the non-bleed dimensions for layouts from Psychology Today. I put below the picture on the left page in the Baskerville Bold Italics with the author’s name underneath in Adobe Grammond Pro and a color backdrop. I titled the photo "Photo Courtesy of Adobe Stock". I selected the color using the color picker and from the photo. I wanted to keep the colors in keeping with the photo. The article text is Minion Pro Regular. The pull out quote is in the center of the 2nd page and the bullet list is in the bottom right had corner. The bullet list has a color backdrop that I think draws the eye to some statistics I found I the article. I put a page number at the bottom of the left page with the magazine name, the volume, issue and date. There is color behind this that I selected from the photo using the color picker.  I did not put a number on the right page, but did include a “cont. on Pg. 64” on the right page as the story continues later in the magazine.

The pullout quote is “Men are like soup; you always want to have some on the backburner”. I did not make that up! It’s directly from the article. I thought it would generate interest.
