This is the city of Liat. Another of my favorite commissions for Knight Errant Games for their Role-Playing Game Heroes’ Tears.
I love how the colors turned out, and the perspective was a ton of fun.
A huge river that seems to cut the world in half dominates this illustration. The city along its edge is built with a very similar premise to other cities in the area. So, the living birch trees form the structures. Even those boats floating in the river are made of a living tree.
Defensive towers rise out of the river near the shoreline. Half-carved, half naturally formed rock and the birch roots make up the towers. You’ll also notice some Tower of Babel architectural influences in there. Along the upper levels sit catapults and ballista. The manned sentries atop them guard the entire stretch of river.
