BIAW Scarcity Workshop
BIAW was a workshop about scarcity in different areas as industry, cities, architecture or economy, that took place in 2011 in ETSAV-UPC.
Working in groups of 10 students and two professors (David Kohn and Sergi Serrat) we analyse places in Barcelona where scarcity leave a mark in urban planning. These marks were actually a scar in the city, easily recognizable like abandoned railways.
For us these spaces will no longer be useless spaces in city. They are an opportunity to find new space in consolidate cities. We created new uses for these areas appreciating elements that give them scarcity.
In order to represent our discussion during the workshop, we made a modular installation by stacking up cardboard boxes in different ways. In each studied area we organized boxes in different shapes to represent the new use, using always the same number of boxes. By these ephemeral installation we show people from the neighborhood how a good architecture and urban design will improve their city.
