Zaha Hadid is anarchitect that has a great influence on me and my design. Seeing the process ofGuangzhou Opera House transforming from computer renderings to a physicalimpressive futuristic architecture was like a dream coming true to me. “The design evolved from the concepts of a naturallandscape and the fascinating interplay between architecture and nature;engaging with the principles of erosion, geology and topography.” (Archdaily.com) Theopera house’s architecture breaths a contemporary and urbanism air, moves withbrave movements like a living creature. Guangzhou Opera House architecture ischaracterized with organic movements, triangle patterns on the building skin, bold dynamic lines. Lying deep underneath is the core of the architecture, sound, music and movement.
Just like in any other building, the bathroom is an indispensable part of theOpera house. At the same time, it is a public space as well as an intimatespace. The bathroom is like a particle in the whole system, its design adoptsthe leading characteristics of the entire architecture. I chose to work with afemale bathroom with a vision to create an intimate space reflecting thedynamism of the architecture and providing a restful space for multi-generationusers. Daltile products cover a great scope in terms of materials, colors, shapes and visual effects, which inspires the designers to think creatively andto create without limits.
The color of the Opera House’s architecture is the sheer contrast of light anddarkness. My bathroom design is in achromatic scheme, where black, white andgrays are played to articulate contrast. The targeted users of this bathroominclude two main groups: the first group includes artists, musicians who work, practice or perform in any of the Opera House’s facilities; the second areaudiences and visitors. Considering these two groups of users with theirprofessions, passion and interest in music and performing arts, the bathroom isdesigned to serve a large scope of users with ages varying between 20 to 70. Blackand white are the “colors” of sound, music, movements, of light and shadows onthe stage. The triangle pattern of the building’s skin is repeated in thebathroom but in a different way. The pattern is a waterfall of triangles, wherebigger triangles from the ceiling falls into smaller and smaller particlesdownward and end into a calm vertical movement. I believe that for music performers, the best color scheme to calm themselves and to generate creativity andinspiration for performing is achromatic, where black and white champion overall of the other colors and have the power of calming and stimulating.
Theproducts I use for the bathroom design include Steel ST70 mosaic tiles 1X1, Onyx EG221X1, Aquamarine EG14 mosaic tiles 1X1, CityJ104. The reflectedsurface of glass tile creates interesting effect when it changes tone withdifferent views. The combination of black tiles and aquamarine tiles is notjust a contrast of pure black and pure white, but an ever-changing contrast ofreflected light.
