The concept of "Urban Geisha", developed from an interest in Japanese culture and art. Within my research, I found the most beautiful articles of clothing were worn by Geishas. I was inspired by their elaborate silk kimonos with cherry blossom and scenic motifs wrapped with large obi waistbands. Even the accessories such as the platform wooden sandals, hair ornaments, umbrellas, and fans were colorful and carefully decorated. The ensemble of a Geisha holds beauty, grace, and drama that I admire.

Geishas were entertainers and that attire isn't very suitable for everyday wear. I wanted to explore the possibility of Geisha inspired casual wear, for modern women living in big cities. Along with an Asian flare, I felt the Garments should be comfortable, stylish, and practical to suit the modern women's lifestyle. To develop my designs, I pulled from different textures and silhouettes of Geisha and traditional Asian dress. For example, I explored the use of kimono sleeves on knit tops, wrap-tie details on skirt and pant waistbands, wide leg cropped pants, and mandarin collars. The texture of fans and umbrellas inspired me to incorporated pleats and panels and the layering of garments over and under the kimonos inspired me to play with the idea of wrap tops. My fabric choices consist of denim, sheers, and rayon blends that can provide an easy wear. I feel that my designs will relate well with any woman who as an appreciation for culture, the arts, and style.
