The Void in our Conception | Infographic poster diptych

Black holes are one of the universe’s many deep mysteries. We have evidence for exactly what happens outside a black hole, but what occurs inside it remains to be a void in our conception. There is no way to prove what events take place within a black hole. As soon as anything crosses the event horizon, the object that once was there, becomes invisible. All communication is impossible because light cannot escape. Therefore according to scientific theory, if light cannot escape, what can escape? But you see, that’s an assumption in itself.

These posters focus on highlighting that no matter how much we speculate – whether scientifically or fictionally – we have absolutely no idea what is inside a black hole. It is a gap in our understanding.

I chose to use the visual metaphor of spaces and gaps to firstly communicate a black hole’s characteristics. Secondly, it expresses the emptiness in our knowledge of what is beyond the event horizon. The visual of the ripped paper is a metaphor for our unknowing. We have an idea of what’s inside the tear, but we can’t say for sure unless we stick our hand in and return unharmed. The traces on the exterior give us clues (black holes can only be indirectly detected) – these are the concepts surrounding the torn paper. The colours of the two posters are complementary. The opposite colours are used to demonstrate the binary between science and fiction. However, they compliment one another, because neither is fact.
