The main point of this piece was to practice several different watercolor techniques using Van Gogh's piece, Saintes-Maries, as a reference. For this piece I used the wet on wet technique for the sand, and topped it off with some salt for an interesting texture. The sky was done with the dry brush technique. With the ocean and the boats I tried to use multiple layers by starting with a wet on wet, letting it dry and then adding details. I started a little too dark with my ocean so the details I wanted to add once it dried did not really work out, I wanted the water too look crisp; however my mistake made it look dull, next time I plan to be more careful with the amount of pigment I start with. Even with the boats I had accidentally tried painting the details in too early which resulted in my layers merging and that blur effect on my piece.
Personally I feel like there was a small improvement to this piece, I feel like my fundamental learning of watercolors themselves has gone up and I am understand them more. Mostly with my gained knowledge of all these techniques, I know have more ideas to chose from when adding color to my piece.Next time I need to start lighter, I tried doing that but used too much pigment, so I know for next time it is a ton of water and little bits of pigment within. Either way I feel like this piece was a great learning tool, and I have gained quite a bit from completing it.
