Greed by Sarah Eckstrom class 6

Describe

My work is my own take on one of the seven deadly sins greed. The process I used in making my drawing consisted of lots of thumbnails. I also used a few references splicing them together to form the coherent image I wanted. The mediums used for it were copics, prismacolors, fine-liners, and a white gel pen for added highlight and detail. The image shows a girl holding a rose in her palm with the vine and the thorns of it curling down her arm.

Analyze

The title of my piece is simply Greed, that is the sin I chose from amongst all seven of the deadly sins. The influence from my references to my piece wasn't very much besides using them for proportion and to have to look at for comparison realism wise. The most present principle of design in my piece is proportion. Since the piece is supposed to resemble a real person proportion was an important implement in making things look accurate and realistic. Another one of the principles used were contrast I used a darker grey background to make the important things pop as well  as using white the bring some high points and added details to attention.

Interpret

My interpretation of the piece is greed and how if you want too much it could end up hurting you in the end. The rose in her hand is the symbol of something in which she desires or want's. And the thorns wrapping around her arm showcase how it's not always a good thing to want too much. The pretty flower in general shows off greed due to the fact that the beautiful flower is now dead because you wanted it for your own selfish viewing desires. The feeling I want to emote from the viewer is understanding of the piece, and to get how the piece relates to greed even though all it is is a girl holding a single rose.

Judge

I feel that this piece was very successful and I'm very proud about how it turned out. Some things I might try and fix next time though are the amount of detail in the hands and rose. Both of those things could use a bit more attention next time I decide to draw something like that. I would also try and improve the background maybe use a different medium so it doesn't turn out as streaky as it did. But I do believe my execution of my idea turned out quite nicely and that what I wanted to show through the piece did.
