Semester 4 Design Studio: CULTURAL HUB (Group Work)
The aim of the project was to activate a certain site along the busy Sudan Street in Cairo through creating a youth culture hub integrated with a bus stop.
CONCEPT
The form complements the linearity of the existing bus stop lanes and structures.
To help generate a concept, we contacted a popular Shaaby (local) music artist, Mahmoud Medny, to inquire about the basic needs and personality traits of the contemporary music artists. Black and white were used in the exterior as his favorite colors.
FORM
2 main masses make up the hub. The white box, integrated with an existing cafeteria, is where most social activities and talent sharing happens, wether dancing, music, poetry or crafts. It is mostly opened to the outside.
The black box is a cantelivered structure in which the music recording and jamming happens. It also activates the lane below it to be used as a concert area. It is mostly closed and insulated from the outside, contrasting the white box.
