(BRICK LAB)

Think_Fez is the hypothetical sister agency to Think_Tanger, an artist institution whose overarching goal is to defend the role of art and culture within the city.

The ‘Brick Lab’ is due to be the pilot project of the institution in the country’s cultural capital, Fez. The site of the project is one of the three historically prominent leather tanneries within the Medina. After hygiene concerns and maintenance issues the tannery fell into disuse. 

The aim of the project was to convert a space rooted in traditional craft, into a machine for experimentation and innovation within the handicraft industry. Through the process of harnessing readily available, recyclable, waste material and moulding it into a basic brick form the structure of the Brick Lab itself would begin to incrementally take shape.  

The building blocks of the Lab were derived from experiments done in the studio with:

+  shredded waste plastic 
+  sand 
+  hair
+  leather 
+  resin
+  sawdust

This then led to the ultimate materiality and form of the final structure.
