The All Star Book

This project, realized in a hybridized paper craft technique (designed and laid out by myself in Photoshop and InDesign), consisted of a two-part exploration of a known product. The first phase included an elaborate research paper on the artefact's origins and past and present cultural impact. The ''shoe'' created here is in fact a book; one may remove the tongue part, which is actually a booklet enumerating both positive and negative facts about the artefact and its impact on society as an object of consumption, through its numerous identities through history (from rebellious teens sneaker to the everyman's labourer's shoe). One side of each page contains the facts, and the other side creates an animated flip book relating to its name, the ''All Star'', which shows an animated star bouncing up and down. This project was aimed at unpacking (literally and figuratively) this artefact through contrasting the positive timeless appeal with its more negative manufacturing practices and corporate strategies, and hence recreating a more realistic and problematic version of this iconic item.

NOTE: This project was done in the context of personal research. The All Star shoe belongs to Converse Shoe Manufacturing Company.
