MAD MALLARD MONTHLY MEMOS
Mad Mallard Monthly Memos are monthly cheat sheets that summarize design principals, techniques and tools that I use as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer.
Here’s how it started: Last summer I led a Digital Illustration workshop at the Pensacola Museum of Art. To prepare, I started working on an outline, making it more and more detailed as I went along because I was afraid to leave something out. In the process, I realized that it might be helpful for students to have access to these notes, so I made an illustrated version for each student.
After the summer break I returned to teaching graphic design and illustration at the University of West Florida. I noticed that some students had forgotten key things that they had learned in my courses in previous semesters. I also noticed that some students were interested in material outside of the scope of the classes that they were taking. I started looking for a solution that would allow me to not re-give entire lectures or to take the whole course off on a tangent, but that would still enhance the students’ learning experience.
The format of Mad Mallard MM limits the amount of information that can fit, so they essentially serve as a crash course into their subject matter. MMMM is for current students, for students who have graduated, and for anyone wanting to know more about design and illustration.
*The methods and information outlined by Mad Mallard MM are what I have personally found to work. They are not the only methods or even necessarily the best methods. Please do not reproduce, for personal use only.
