ESPELAND BED, 2012

A friend of mine commissioned me to make a bed frame for her. I stole the idea from the German architecture firm, Netwerch and modified it. The form reminded me of a spine and ribcage and I wanted to heighten that association. The modularity and knockdown assembly were also appealing because the completed bed frame needed to be shipped out of state. Making it from scratch as a one-off was an exciting challenge. The bent plywood form required making a two-part mold and a special jig for cutting the interlocking tabs.

The bed frame measures 18" x 58.75" x 75” and fits a standard full-size mattress.
