Penguin Books: Pride and Prejudice Gift Box Set

The Celebration of 200th Anniversary of Jane Austen
Pride and Prejudice Gift Box Set for Penguin Books
October 2016

With the cooperation with Penguin Books, we have designed a box set for the classic Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice under two themes, First Impression and Blind Spot. Using bold graphics and minimalistic style, it hopes to broaden the public audience.

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet who dealing with the issues of manners, morality and marriage in the society of late 18th century in England. This story is an all-time classic of Jane Austen that included themes that reflected many social issues that related to classes, marriage, reputation, and love. We aim to deliver a modern message of the all-time classic through our design that also fit into the themes of the story.

The definition of “first impression” means a mental image of particular person. Under the RGB 3D effect, we will see a completed image of the portrait of Elizabeth. Without it, a distorted image with the pictures of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy can be seen.

Human beings are too complicated that a full image of somebody cannot be fully represented. The nature of one person is all composited with different pieces or parts. With the effect of collage, the cut and paste images of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth indicate the complexity of human beings. We cannot judge or value people’s true natures by looking at the surfaces or appearances.

Blind spot is a blur dot that represents Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy can not see both true natures clearly. Because they are all blinded and get confused by their own perceptions either misconceptions towards each other. Jane Austen shows the readers that human beings are always have limited senses to fully understand the facts or truths.

The adapted materials for the box is in high density that can be hardly broken down. It symbolises an invaluable relationship involves of the act of treasuring each other. Trying to protect the love from destruction by treating love carefully and wholeheartedly.

When readers are looking at the box, they would try to figure out what it is inside the box. The bubble wrap may cause certain extent of distraction that users may not be see it clearly. The users can physically sense the idea of “blind spot” by touching the bubble wrap. It corresponds to the idea of blind spot: hardly see through the inside parts of somebody or something.
