What is Illustration?

This project was in answer to the brief "What is illustration"... after doing some initial studies at the Saatchi Gallery, as well as thinking about some of my favourite artists like Keith Haring, I decided to draw an illustrator's desk and sketchbook of ideas, which when left alone comes alive.

The little dogs are an homage to Keith Haring, an artist who straddles the realms of street art, illustration and fine art. The drawing is done in coloured pencil - a bundle of which are shown on the desk in a mug.
The Final Image: "What is Illustration"

A draft for the final image.
Initial visual research. Colour Pencil on paper. The organic and the abstract.
Planning and ideas generating: I liked the concept of drawings coming alive while the illustrator was asleep in bed.
Image construction: I often draw elements separately, and then compose them in photoshop. This gives me the freedom to play around with composition, and save the elements for use in future projects.
Another plant I drew for a separate project, I combined it with a Keith Haring inspired dog to be used for a colourful collection of postcards.
