Boundary Waters Travel Poster

  Boundary Waters Travel Poster
The Boundary Waters -- a picturesque gem tucked away in the northern Minnesota Wilderness featuring clear water, fresh air, and greenery as far as the eye can see. In this picture, a canoeist peers ahead, taking a temporary reprieve from the paddling to enjoy the scenery. The logo above the canoeist originates from the symbols of the Boundary Waters: a moose, the trees, and the state shape and abbreviation. This photo was an original photo taken by Eric Lindholm from the back of the canoe to capture the beauty of the Boundary Waters and was edited on photoshop with a WPA poster inspiration.

     Sketches
The travel poster was heavily inspired by the WPA posters made during 1936 to 1943. After much time contemplating on the style of the poster, we decided to go for a more simplistic look, with the use of different photo filters to gain more of a blurred and saturated look. We experimented with different fonts and typography including the idea to incorporate the border mark into one of the letters. Other ideas included moving the font to the left side corner but was quickly rejected. We also tested other filters that did not make it into the final product.

Here are some of the WPA posters used for inspiration:

   Final Product
The placement for the font came pretty naturally with this picture since the position of the trees on either side of the canoeist form a natural V shape that converge towards the center. We also used a logo that originally had the text circumventing the middle design, but we decided to remove that text to eliminate redundancy and make the design have more imagery. The WPA finish on this design was a common thread in many National Park posters and we thought it would be appropriate to utilize this filter with our picture. The font we used was Homestead and since it related to trees with its sturdiness and thickness .
