GSA Year 2
TEXTURE AND LINE
You are to investigate texture and line as inspiration for the design and fabrication of a brooch.
Take this opportunity to get used to your local surroundings looking for good examples of interesting surfaces, texture and line in the surrounding area. (...) Your brooch design should incorporate appropriate techniques and dimensions; it should not exceed 70mm in any direction.

my response.
I have based my research for this project at Glasgow's Botanics. I was inspired by the architectural lines of the glass construction surrounding the plants. Nature is so contrasting with the architecture, it has its own order which frequently seems to be very chaotic. It also has fascinating textures. I took a closer look at ferns and fossils, the natural imprints of beautiful patterns. In my brooch, I aimed to depict the contrast of the strong and regular roof construction and the delicacy of ferns. I was playing with the colour and texture as well as with the form by joining oxidised copper with silver. The circular shape of my piece comes from the surrounding as well but also symbolises the balance.
