Growing Demographic of Millennial Art Buyers

Robert Fishko operates Forum Gallery, a home for modern and contemporary art in New York. As part of his work in customer relations and art sales, Robert Fishko routinely advises collectors who wish to add to their collections.

The generation known as millennials has become the largest demographic in the United States labor force. These consumers are spending in the trillions annually, and they are expected to inherit at least $30 billion in the next few years. As these trends continue, millennials are becoming larger players in the world of art collecting.

As a general rule, millennials tend to have less capital than the generations before them. They may not be bidding on high-ticket items at Christie's, but they often work closely with peers in order to find the art they want before it is even shown at a gallery. They are also the most likely to use social media to connect with galleries and stay in touch with their favorite artists.

In terms of the actual artwork, younger buyers tend to gravitate toward unusual materials. They are more likely to purchase less traditional works that could be considered risky investments by more seasoned collectors. They also view the art as an extension of who they are and look for up-and-coming stars.
