The Brain of Design Management

SCAD Design Management Grad Show

Our department wanted to come up with an innovative way to explain what Design Management is, which is often a misconception.

Challenge: Give the right message to all types of stakeholders.

Skills: Concept development, Creative facilitation + engagement,  Leadership + team building, Design Thinking, Ideation, Creative Thinking, Building things.
The experience
The experience was called “The Brain of Design Management” which consisted of having two rooms that represent each side of the brain: the logical one and the creative one; left and right, respectively. This came from the idea that Design Management is a discipline that combines the two sides of the brain. Each room had interactive activities that represented its characteristics.
We came up with the idea that design managers are rule breakers so to represent this, we decided to put the professors “behind bars” and having an explanation of how they broke the rules in their professional career.
LEFT BRAIN
The left brain had a neuron structure which represented the network of Design Management. We asked alumni, students, professors, parents, and visitors to leave their business cards or write their contact information to join the DMGT Network.

We built a photo booth so Rule Breakers had their mugshot taken.
RIGHT BRAIN
In the right brain, we invited people to participate in the REFRAME NAME GAME. "Reframing" is something that Design Managers do to understand problems or situations from different points of view. We invited people to challenge their creativity to rename everyday objects without using the name of the object. For example, someone renamed a pocket mirror "ego-center".
We also had a Snapchat Filter and another space for people to take their mugshot phot with the filter.
The making of
This project took me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to develop construction skills. The team consisted of two industrial designers and four design managers, so the collaboration between all members was critical to the success of the experience.
