Ling Chen's profile

Lacquer painting

I am especially drawn to the freehand brushwork of traditional Chinese ink paintings. While I immersed myself into the gorgeous night views of metropolis, the flow of colour and light inspired me.

This painting series show the combination between minimalism and sophisticated, silence and noise, nature and humanity, tradition and modernity. The dynamic and deft brushwork paired with the poetic beauty of the “Void” found in Chinese aesthetics, which created the unique art language.
Born in Yangzhou, a beautiful ancient town with more than 2500-year history. Its luxuriant historical and cultural sedimentation have profoundly influenced me, especially my artworks. My hometown is renowned for many types of traditional Chinese art, and the lacquer painting is one of the most famous, which has more than thousands of years.

I synthesised the traditional technical of lacquer and modern elements of metropolis painted in above paintings, which could make the integration effect of my artworks more dramatic in the next step.
This lacquer painting series used Chinese lacquer as the main material and try to integrate the traditional techniques and modern aesthetics in art creation. I used eggshells to cover the white space that made my artworks rich in natural texture and visual impact. The final works, two lacquer paintings of 1.2*0.9m size, have gone through the brushing, scattering lacquer powder, covering foil powder and polishing over and over again, within one month.
