Elements and Principles of Design

Value

Value refers to the visible lightness or darkness of a colour. In this image, you can see that the light is coming from above with the right side or his head is brighter than the other and it gradually gets darker as you go lower down the photo.

Colour

Colour in images is used to express things like mood, warmth, emotion, etc. The white represents hope and light, blue represents confidence and integrity, yellow represents joy and energy, and the pink represents compassion and friendship.
Emphasis

Emphasis is the technique where an area or object specifically singled out to become the focal point of the image. Emphasis has been used through colour to bring attention to the player with the bright, yellow vest. Small depth of field is also used to blur out the background making him the only subject in focus.

Balance

Balance is a technique used to distribute the weight of the subject(s) evenly throughout the image. In this image, symmetrical balance is used with both sides of the image holding the same weight with the subject placed symmetrically in the middle.
Form

Form is the representation of the three dimensions in a three-dimensional subject. In this image, you can see the three-dimensional shape of the ball with some help from the shadow. This is due to the lighting, having the sun directly above.
Harmony

Harmony is when a consistent or orderly arrangement of parts of an image make it pleasing. In this image, you can see two boys putting in a passionate tackle to show their love for the game with the green grass surrounding them, bringing them together.
Line

Line is the element where a series of marks or points suggest the character, weight and direction of a subject in an image. In this image, both the direction, and weight of the net are suggested due to the width of the lines and the horizontal presence of the net.
Movement

Movement is the technique where the viewers eyes are lead to the subject due to movement of something complementing it. In the image, the white line starting from the bottom of the image leads your eyes to the football at the end.
Pattern

Pattern is the use of elements together being repeated. It is the repetition of lines, shapes, tones or colour. In this image, it repeats the lines in smaller and larger forms being rolled into one.
Variety

Variety refers to a variety and multiple types of a subject displayed as the subject. This image displays two different weights used as fitness resources that distinct types of people might use.
Scale and Proportion

Scale and Proportion refers to the comparison of two varied sizes of subjects in an image. In this image, you can see that the two players (main subject) are much bigger in proportion to the players at the top of the image.
Shape

Shape is used in images to provide an interesting frame for your photo with some doing better jobs than others. In this image, although the cone isn’t fully triangle shaped, the angle in which the image was shot makes it look as if the shape of the cone is meant to be a triangle.
Similarity

Similarity is the technique of comparing two subjects that are similar or look alike and how grouping is affected. This image displays two similar types of cones involving assorted colours and their size through placement.
Space

Space refers to the areas or distance between the subject to the edges of an image. This image displays the subject well with clear, focused subject against the solid green grass as a background with a big amount of space surrounding it.
Texture

Texture in an image refers to the surface detail of the subject. In this image, you can see it is sharp with ridges on the outside of the ball highly visible with a good amount of light shining onto it.
Volume

Volume refers to the unit of three-dimensional measure of space that comprises a length, a width, and a height. This image displays volume well with the half full bottle conveying in the image the bottles weight and size.
Typography

Typography is the arranging or procedure of making written language legible and readable when displayed. In this image, it displays that this is a piece of gear a certain player or individual owns having the number of 17.
Unity

Unity is the technique where multiple subjects are brought together to create something better as a whole. It shows that this football team are united and are better together as a team rather than as individuals.
