Franz Kafka Collection

Objective
Franz Kafka is considered one of the most influential authors of 20th century literature. His stories examine the surreal of the reality to which he lived in. These surreal elements create dream like feelings within his stories and are heavy influences on the design solutions. One goal of these designs was that they should stay true to the period to which Kafka published his stories. Majority of the stories were published within the 1930’s and so the style takes inspiration from the early design movements during that time.

Solution
The overall concept of this collection is driven by mystery and the surreal. Figures throughout the designs are illustrated in a way to present no recognizable facial features. Characters are instead flat representations of the people brought to life by Kafka's words. Readers create the faces for the characters in books, so the idea was to not interrupt the interpretations of Kafka’s characters.
