Editorial Spot Illustrations

For this project, I was required to make a series of three stylized editorial spot illustrations. The topic was about the effects of video games on culture. The illustrations had to be able to be read as either separate pieces, or as a singular whole.
I chose medieval art for inspiration and style. Using the main characters of Mario, Bowser, Toad, and Peach for the video game element. I placed a letter behind each pf the characters to tie in the illustrated aspect.  Each spot has an intense texture in the background to represent an old page. Peach is holding Toad to show her similarity to Madonna. Bowser has a sword to express power and strength. The text further helps to convey the sense of medieval illumination to the piece. And finally, Mario has a shield to reference power ups found in his games.
The inspiration came from Medieval Illustrations found in Illuminated manuscripts and literature. I placed Bowser in between Marion and Peach to show the struggle found in most Mario games. By giving Bowser a sword and not giving one to Mario, i wanted to show how Bowser is the attacker, and Mario the defender. Peach and Toad are placed behind Bowser to show their captivity. However, they are strong enough, each on their own to tell a story. Peach
as Madonna. Bowser as aggressive. Mario as a Defender.
