What if you could make a flying ship? Wicked Flying Model Ships took a different approach to the traditional model ship collectibles. Instead of buying an assembly and crafting your boring typical ship with sails and string Wicked flying Model Ships provides you with an already made mini ship that the consumer has to add to and decorate to make more then just an ocean vessel but a voyager of the skies. Along with the ship the consumer is provided with materials, such as additional string and rods, pre-made wings, model turbines, propellers, a model blimp, and even a display box to showcase the creation.
The outer container for each of the different five ships is a hand crafted shadow box. A frame is used to decorated the front of the box and then layered in such a way there are gaps. These gaps allow more light into the shadow box and gives it a pallet look. The gaps also allow the consumer to hang objects and the ships by string in the shadow box to give the illusion that it is flying. The box is then colored white and provided with a glass to protect the materials inside.
Wrapping around the shadow box is the label. The front is designed at a skewed diagonal angle on the front and straight on the back. This starts to develop a extreme contrast from the white shadow box as the label is brightly colored and heavily complex. The typography is treated with a contemporary vintage look waving and moving diagonally throughout the label. The words ‘Wicked Flying Model Ships’ waves across with 3d effects and complex shadowing. Ribbons highlight the typography and flow around with complex borders and high details. Words like ‘Assembly and Display, Collectors Item, and Limited Edition’ are set in the design to elevate the viewer’s attention.
Each boat and package has it own characteristics. The concept is biased o of Terry Gilliam’s Miracle of Flight animation. The main character in the story was astonished by the idea of man in fight, so, hysterically Gilliam juxtaposed flying elements to the character as if he was trying to make himself into a flying machine. For my concept and design I created my own characters based o some idioms such as pigs flying. I hand drew each iteration of characters and had them interact with the design. The ‘When Pigs Float’ series had pigs tied to balloons, ‘Son of a Cow’ is illustrated with cows that have propellers as tails, ‘Kamikaze Fish’ has sh falling down and exploding, ‘Run like Tortoise’ is a Turtle with chicken feet, and then ‘One Thousand Parrots’ and a bunch of parrots holding on to a pirate .
