The Epic Adventure of Bob the Blob

In May 2017, Adobe hosted a Creative Jam Tournament at UCLA, where teams of two were given 3 hours to create a design or visual artwork based on the theme "Far Out." I teamed up with fellow designer and good friend Alison Jeng, creating a surreal and comical visual narrative that ended up receiving the People's Choice Award for the tournament.

On first thought the phrase, "Far Out" stimulated imagery of outer space and galactic elements. However, Alison and I wanted to push farther out from the conventional, initial interpretations of the phrase most others would adopt. We decided to look at "Far Out" as weird, random, and beyond logical understanding. We approached the phrase in the context of thoughts or streams of consciousness which often can go on pretty random, "far out" tangents.  For instance, thinking about work you need to get done for the day, your eye suddenly spots an M&M wrapper on the floor which in turn triggers memories of  things revolving around M&Ms but totally unrelated to your previous thoughts about what to do that day.

IDEATION SKETCHES + NOTES:
Due to the time constraint, we were unable to illustrate "Tangent 3". However, we left the ending open to future possible development of Bob's epic adventure. Through the generic yet simultaneously unique and random persona of Bob the Blob, we worked to visualize this phenomenon of pervasive, far out thoughts through this strange comic:
