CLASSICAL ANIMATION WORKFLOW & TECHNIQUES

After running live workshops with MoGraph Mentor and having loved it a lot, I’m very happy to now bring the course as a training series, hoping to spread Classical Animation even further! I wouldn’t be lying if I say that this is a dream come true...and I know that sounds cheesy! :)

The course is intended for both students with no previous Animation knowledge or experienced After Effects / 3D animators with no experience with frame by frame, who are looking for a fresh motivation or incentive in their careers. We will cover lots of technical stuff in these six classes, but most of all, I hope to share my passion for Animation and spark the love for frame by frame.

We will get to know the steps behind it so you can improve your animation abilities, grow your confidence level with frame by frame and develop the tools to observe Animation, Motion Graphics and real-life movements with a classical animator’s mind. Also, you will have the opportunity to discover a new way to start your animation, by roughing out a frame by frame pass and using it as a timing guide for the final animation, which could be done in any software.

If that’s something you are interested, make sure to click on the link below to know more about the course and how to apply:

The course is focused on learning by practicing and you will be challenged with 3 assignments. Check below a bit more about each one. Those were done by me and their step by step Adobe Animate files will be provided when you sign up. :)

WEEKS 1 and 2  •  SHAPE

We will start by planning our shot, using both Straight Ahead and Pose to Pose techniques. We can use charts to help with Timing and Spacing and guides to help us create smooth Arcs. We will also talk about Easing in and Easing out and how to approach Mass and Volume when animating Squash and Stretch.

Once we ge
t to a good rough pass, with Keyframes, Breakdowns and Inbetweens, it's time to clean up the shot and get it into its final state. We will work on cleaning-up our shapes, coloring and adding details such as shadows and highlights.
WEEKS 3 and 4  •  BOUNCING HEAD
The next two classes are planned to be a bridge between the Shape assignment and the coming Character assignment. We will use a simple Bouncing Head to understand and practice principles like Anticipation and Settle, as well as focusing more on the drawing itself, applying concepts that will help you improve your animation, such as construction lines, tridimensional thinking and Solid Drawing.

We will also learn and practice Follow Through and Overlapping Action, combining them with the Wave Principle.
WEEKS 5 and 6  •  CHARACTER

In the last two classes, we will expand the principles we saw and practiced in the previous assignments and see how we can apply those to characters. We will talk a lot about Character Design principles that will help with Posing the character the best way possible, achieving Appeal and animation readability. We will also see how to approach arms and legs, using Successive Breaking of Joints.

The idea behind this assignment is to focus on the Mechanics behind the movement, animating a fun action scene where the character moves from side to side. At this point, you will be able to use all the 12 Principles of Animation to give your character a big range of movements.
And, yep, Smears will be covered as well! :)

THANKS!
