To Live/To Work: Urban Housing

This project began as a group effort to produce a masterplan on a large site in the city centre of Glasgow. This masterplan had to include a variation of different housing and retail units while tying in with the block style that Glasgow follows. Once the masterplan had been finalised each member of the group took an area and began to develop their own urban housing building. This particular building included one bedroom flats for the elderly, three bedroom duplex flats for families and studio flats on the top floor for artists. The concept of this building was based on the old Glasgow style tenement; circulation down the middle and flats branching off to the side. The flats were also designed around a core to allow services to filter up and down the building easily. Another aspect of old Glasgow I was trying to reintroduce was the ‘steamie’ by including a communal laundry on the ground floor as well as a cafe and gallery to encourage neighbours to engage with each other, something that is lose in a lot of housing blocks now.

 Drawings not to scale.
