Campus Bike Club - Visual Identity & Branding

The Campus Bike Club is a place where bicycle enthusiasts are able to meet, cycle, and socialise together in a supportive environment. Andrew’s vision for the club emphasises the need for inclusivity, relaxation, as well as a little Michigan pride due to ties with the University. My own vision for the club is that it can expand past the Ann Arbor campus, with small Campus Clubs growing throughout America, each using this brand identity. With small changes to the location identifier and primary colours, ‘Campus Bike Club’ can establish itself as a nation-wide club with different sections in each new location. The Ann Arbor location uses colours which tie with the University of Michigan’s own brand identity, meaning that posters, clothing, signage and more will be a perfect fit in the community.

What is seen above is the design that I decided to develop further. The idea of a minimalist bike, with only enough lines for it to be recognisable, was what I envisioned the CBC logo to become. I experimented with wheel size, placement, handlebar angles, and pedals. I also started seeing how the bikes could stack together in a cohesive way.

Moving towards a more finalised design, I made sure that my design could stand up when made very small, and in different thicknesses. I also experimented more with handlebars, line dynamics, adaptability, and colour.

For my final mark, I chose to go with a bike with dynamic line weight, with the availability for it to be thicker or thinner, depending on the situation. The diagonally placed handlebars and partial wheels evoke a sense of movement, and the font backs up the image with its clean and minimalist style.

In some cases an alternative logo may need to be used. These alternative versions are to only be used specific cases: displaying or printing in black and white, displays or prints which use limited colour, or for cases where a darker background-logo is needed, the right-most logo may be used. The logotypes are for use on professional materials such as letterheads and mailing labels.

Whenever ‘Campus Bike Club’ is written, the font DIN Alternate is to be used. Underneath, ‘Ann Arbor’ is written in Avenir Medium. For large amounts of text such as body copy, letters, websites etc. Avenir Medium should be used. For headings, titles, names on business cards etc. DIN Alternate should be used.
