About the work.

Growing up in a time when women can be rebellious and make their own choices without a man, the male figure/leader is not present in my images because he never existed.

My work uses light to conjure up this otherworldliness. It acknowledges that what you see isn’t all there is. It brings about a perception of reality that there is more to life than what you see right in front of you; not just beyond the scope of the camera, but a whole other dimension.

There is something grave and tragic about the characters I photograph. These young women have the courage to stand up to some type of tragedy they face. They may have made a wrong decision but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they are brave and strong.

These characters may sometimes feel isolated but are deeply rooted in their strong friendships and familial history. The viewer sees them through a peephole as the rest of their world radiates from them but also behind them. People look at young women as being pretty and fruitless and may not realize the genuine issues they are dealing with during this transition time.

The young women I photograph have a history, a personal one as well as a bigger sense of history; where they inherit things from their ancestors and are still surrounded by the past.

These photographs were shot with a large format camera and scanned and edited in Photoshop and Lightroom.
