DESPAIR
Art Statement

“Despair” is a multi-technique animation that circles ideas of access to safe abortion through imagery. This project has been inspired by the current situation of women in Peru, where abortions are illegal even in cases of rape; and the United States today, facing a government that is openly against abortion. Since my art practice is influenced by notions of social justice and feminism, I acknowledge an artistic response is due given the current situation of female body policing in different parts of the world. That is also why I prefer to work without a dialogue, rather trusting the selection of images and sequences as the sole need for clear communication.
Project Description

“Despair” is a full colour and sound animation that circulates around the ideas of access to abortion. This short animation is a mixture of 2D, 3D, and stop-motion animation composed into a single thematic video that contains audio samples of male politicians and public figures from the USA and Peru denying women's ownership over their bodies. It makes use of a non-narrative space and is guided by easy to recognise visual analogies. I consider animation a medium that allows the portrayal of complex ideas and strong messages in a subtle, beautiful, and more lingering way. Since my subject matter brings many connotations with it, animation brings a wider range of alternatives to distillate theses complex undertones in a more dynamic manner.
