Design has been noted to be a discipline that has the power to influence, persuade and inform, and many have observed that it exerts considerable influence over human lives and its futures. Design activism, while not a new form of design, has gained much attention from the industry, while the emergence of more works from this practice.

Under the term of "design activism" lies critical design; a form of practice that is related to design activism in that it shares a provocative nature. This compendium seeks to understand the definitions of "design" and "activism" as terms used on its own as well as together, and provide a brief history of design activism. In addition, it traces the history and practice of critical design and investigates its relationship to design activism through a comparative analysis of case studies from prominent designers operating in the field.

Finally, the compendium concludes with questions that set the basis for further inquiry into critical design in its potential and implications as a means of practice.
