Filmmaking for Instructional Videos

The following is a filmmaking project on an instructional video for demonstrating how to use watercolor pencils targeting a 6-12 grade student audience. The purpose of the project is to understand the filmmaking process from pre-production storyboards, to film production, and finally to post-production editing, all while imbedding storytelling elements. This project is intended for instructional designers and K-12 educators.
Pre-production: Storyboards

Below is the storyboard for "How to use watercolor pencils" instructional video for 6-12 grade students. Between draft and final version, a second camera angle was added, as well as, the development of the script. This storyboard was created in Keynote.
Production: Filming

Below is the rough-cut of the "How to use watercolor pencils" instructional video. In this phase, the footage of the demonstration was captured in two different angles (front and side), each without sound, and was edited in iMovie.
Following the rough-cut is the intermediate-cut, where initial editing is made. Some of the edits include adding transitions, adding an extreme close up, speeding up clips of the footage to help shorten the length of the video, and adding audio narration tracks.
Post-production: Final Edits

Below is the fine-cut of the instructional video. Additional editing was made including cutaways to color theory vocabulary, re-recording narration tracks, and background music. GarageBand was used in this phase's final edits. Once the final edits were completed, the video was compressed into an mp4 file.
