Screen Printing - Diego's Last Performance

Diego's Last Performance
For one of my workshops at Srishti, I had taken up screen printing. We were to take up a Historically or Socially relevant image and alter it so that a print could be made of it in the traditional Silk Screen Printing method.
Test Prints
Before my final prints, I made a few of prints of a different image to get the feel of a new technique and experiment with layers.
Final Prints
The chosen image, depicts Diego Torquato, playing the violin in the String Orchestra of the Afro Reggae, which is a non-profit organisation that gives children hope by providing an escape from their impoverished and crime ridden environments. The occasion taking place in the picture, is the funeral of his social project coordinator, Evandro João Silva, who was murdered in downtown Rio. Diego, who suffered from several illnesses as a child, grew up in the slums of Parada de Lucas. He dreamed that the violin would change his life. Unfortunately, shortly after this picture was taken Diego died of leukemia.
At Diego's funeral José Júnior, the coordinator of Afro Reggae stated:
"I think the legacy of Diego is hope, it is the willingness to change, to transform."
