Say it with proteins: an alphabet of crystal structures

With Howarth Protein font you can easily create short texts for headlines on scientific presentations and  posters, or simply stack few characters to create some random art to inspire your student on Protein structure and function.

- Photos generated with the VMD program (http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/)
- Adapted from the work of Dr. Mark Howarth with some modifications:

+ The structure of Semaphorin 6A extracellular domain (PDB ID: 3afc) is not so suitable for letter P since the bottom part of the « P » is so short. I used  FimD (PDB ID: 4j3o) for both letter D and P. Interestingly, in different display angles, FimD looks similar to either letter D or P.

+ To obtain a better view for this font, selected protein crystal structures are displayed using Surf as drawing method. B and Q are still displayed with cartoon format since Surf does not show the corresponding letter-alike shape.

+ Proteins are colored with the secondary structure format. Letter O is an exception: Since it is derived from a homododecameric form,  the secondary structure format somehow could not be applied.
