Concept Art - Steve Tanimoto

This is a character development for a freelance work. The goal of the project is to visualize a character concept into concept art and 3D model. The character, Steve Tanimoto, is an asian-american guy who works as a tattoo artist. Here's some of the early design concepts.

After the client's approval, I decided to make some clothing concept for the character. I brainstormed through some japanese fashion concept to american tattoo artist 101 fashion style.

Cloth Development

Here is the final concept art for the Steve character. I used the most famous James Dean pose for the final character pose. Unfortunately, I still needed to work on some anatomy issue, but I've got the client's approval so I decided not to make any change for the final art.

After getting the client's final approval for the concept work, I started making the 3D sculpt of the character. This is my first time working on a realistic human character, so I used a lot of references to get the facial structure just right. The character's hair was done using zbrush fibermesh.

Head Details

After finishing the character's body sculpt, the next part is to make the character clothes. The clothes are modeled in Marvelous Designer (my first time using MD5 and it's amazing tool to use), and then exported to zbrush for details and final refinements especially the wrinkles.

Here's the texture maps that are used for the character. For the Diffuse Map, I used mainly photoshop to make the texture. Ambient Occlusion(AO), Cavity and Normal Maps are all baked in Knald.

Here is a side-by-side comparison between the final 3D and 2D concept. The final 3D model has a more refined facial structure than the intial 2D concept. There is also a different tattoo design and the obvious shoe color in the final 3D model.

Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching my work!
