Historically they didn't exist and usually appear in fictional and cinematic accounts of pirates like 'Treasure Island', 'The Goonies' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. This illustration was hand painted with ink and coffee grounds using all the traditional tropes of a treasure map.
