For this project, I was required to create a product thats packaging can be reused, as the holidays were coming up and the disposing of packaging and excess material is at a high.
I've always noticed on social media (i.e. Instagram), small product based businesses that don't have access to studio quality lighting and are not adept at marketing, find themselves posting photos of their product that are very low quality, which in turn doesn't engage potential consumers and convert them into sales. So in doing some research, I found that light boxes that are fairly easy to use and are available to purchase either have too many pieces with no storage options and/or too expensive, or flimsy.
So in response, I created a light box that was affordable, simple and easy to use, sturdy and has storage. The materials I chose were recycled cardboard and nylon. The packaging that it comes in, turns into the light box as it has slots on its top side where a frame can be placed in order to create the box. It comes with 2 LED studio quality lights and multiple color backdrops.
I chose the name Instalight to play off of Instagrams popular use of internet marketing for small product based businesses and because it's so easy to set up you can do so in an instant. The logo mark plays off of the actual product (it being a box) and it's the same shape as the Instagram logo along with some rays beaming out of the box, insinuating that it's being illuminated like a light box would.
With the advice of my professor and a team of business students who I presented this project to in December 2016, they suggested I sign up for a startup incubator that San Diego State University offers at the Zahn Center, which helps mold and educate entrepreneurs. I ended up pitching my idea amongst 84 other teams, and I was one of the 12 teams chosen to participate in the program to develop my idea and launch this product!
