One Step Up
An Expansion Plan for Raleigh, NC
One Step Up is an urban rehabilitation project for downtown Raleigh, NC. In this specific part of downtown Raleigh homelessness and poverty are major problems that have turned a tourist attraction into a slum. One Step Up allows the poverty stricken citizens of Raleigh a chance to get back on their feet and contribute back to society. This development contains three major components: shelter/medical, education/job placement, and residential. The first is the shelter/medical center. Here, the homeless population can receive food, shelter, and medical assistance. The second is the educational aspect. Here the user can receive education regarding vertical farming. The user benefits from acquiring new skills that can help them get a job in the future and the One Step Up project benefits by selling all of the fruits and vegetables produced, in the farmers market located in the courtyard of the complex. The final aspect of the One Step Up development is the residential tower which includes low to middle income housing. This three step system helps to expand the downtown area, fight poverty, clean up the streets, and provide fresh produce to the citizens of Raleigh. The raised walkway connects the existing greenway to Moore Square in downtown Raleigh, promoting the walkability and bikeability of the city.
