An Emulation of Gustav Klimt

An Emulation
Gustav Klimt's Adele Bloch Bauer II
Study of the painting and the artist.
Gustav Klimt
A painting made in 1907, took threeyears for completion. Gustav Klimt made this self-portrait of Adele BlochBauer, the wife of Ferdinand Bloch- Bauer, a wealthy industrialist.
This painting is a gold-fleckedportrayal of a Viennese sugar magnate’s wife, and the painting is made out ofmany decorative materials, this was Klimt’s style. This was his way of boastingabout his extravagant expanses of gold and silver leaf applied directly on thecanvas.
The painting is textured because ofthe use of gold and silver flecked on the canvas. Being a self-portrait it isfigurative in form. It shows the complex Jugendstil style (Art Nouveau).
The use of color is a limitedpalette. I would consider it more as a monochrome painting. The tinted areasare of the same hue as are the toned areas. The hue is yellow orange and thecolor scheme is Warm.
Even though being monochromatic theuse of texture makes his painting so rich and detailed. His painting usespatterns as texture. On the dress portion of the portrait he has created flateyes without any dimension but attractive in nature. For the couch on which thefigure is seated has another pattern to differentiate the material and object, for the wallpaper he used dotted fine dashes of the gold and silver. This useof various patterns make it visually easier to differentiate and know thedifferent objects in the painting scene and the intricacies in the pattern makethe painting even more attractive and enduring to look at.

The painting in progress.
