Pans Labyrinth: Set design

Pans Labyrinth set design
The re-occurring theme that was taken from studying the story of Pans Labyrinth was that of entrapment of the main character Ofelia. She' s trapped in a world of evil and suffering with her only salvage being that of the faun.
While looking at German expressionism the concept of entrapment and the use of shadows and dull colours was current throughout. Therefore while designing the set for Pans Labyrinth this colour scheme has been taken on board with the use of cage like boxes creating the main set. These boxes are adaptable throughout, from creating a tunnel in the tree and frog scene where she journeys underground, to creating pieces of furniture in the mill scene in which the captain lives. Semi-translucent screens allow shadows to be created in the form of trees for the forest while through the mill scene the screens are fully translucent. Overall the set appears minimalist and conceptual, conveying the dark depressive image of which the story signifies across to the audience.
