Serif: Typeface Design and Anatomy Book

*Winner 2009 SEED Award from AIGA* When given the open-ended project to create a book on anything we wanted (I know, what a grand, amazing, and frighteningly wide set of parameters) I was inspired by a recent course I had taken in Typeface Design. The main textbook we used in this course was Karen Cheng’s Designing Type. If you are even considering designing a typeface, this needs to be your first stop. It is an amazing in-depth analysis of typeface anatomy.

I decided for my artist book, to create a visual aid for teaching type design, inspired by Cheng’s definitive text. I chose a flagbook accordion style, as it allows for a unique way of arranging information, and has the duel functionality of being able to be turned page by page like a normal book, or set out so that all pages can be viewed at once.

The top section is the anatomy of the basic set of letters used to create an alphabet and how they relate to each other, the middle is a time line of type categories, and the bottom is a extensive list of typeface anatomical terms. The covers are wrapped in a metallic black book cloth and inset with polypropylene windows which mirror the placement of the flags. This book won a 2009 SEED award for editorial design.
