The Festival Of Colour 'La Colour' | EIZO Live Brief

'La Colour' The Colour
The Festival Of Colour
For my University project, I have decided to do an EIZO brief for our Information Applications module. It was called “The Festival of Colour”. They wanted us to imagine an international event that seeks to celebrate and explore the wonder of colour. The exhibition would be held at London Olympia Exhibition Centre. This event would offer visitors a range of experiences to stimulate the imagination, provoke thought and establish a deeper understanding and awareness of colour – its influence, meaning and properties. I was very keen to do the branding, promotional material and create the corporate identity for this upcoming exhibition. I thought that it was a very interesting proposition and I could see many possibilities for it. I felt like it had a lot of potential and would give me the freedom to come up with my own ideas and designs as a pose to the first and second year modules. I feel like it is one of my strengths too and would love to be involved in branding and advertising in the future.
I named the exhibition ‘La Colour’. I called it this because it gives off the impression that the exhibition is every single aspect of colour and nothing more. It is about everything to do with colour and just how fascinating it is. I feel like this was a very good choice of name for the exhibition and works really well.
For my project, I really wanted it to have some historical reference of some kind rather than just an idea and design concept. The festival is supposed to be a celebration and exhibit of anything to do with colour. Taking this information and breaking down the brief to understand it better, I started researching and thinking of key events in time that colour played a major role in. One of these events/moments that interested me was the transition from black and white to colour television. This is where my obsession with the importance of colour started. It taught me about how we take colour for granted in so many ways every single day in this modern era. I really wanted to design something that made people aware of just how important colour is in our every day lives and what it would be like if it was taken away from us. This is why my final pieces focus on colour subtraction and show a mix of black and white with colour too to show the differences between the two and show the contrast between them. The logo and texture over the final design pieces is also very much inspired by the old black and white televisions and when they used to lose signal. All of my work was created using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
The aim of this project was to create a successful brand identity that was fit for purpose but was also unique and unusual to set itself apart from other art exhibition advertisements in the past. I also wanted to make sure that it was all from my own concept, inspiration and imagination, which it is. I say this because in the past there have been briefs that limit what you can and cannot do. However, I feel like I have had a lot more room to breathe and design in this project and I am pleased with the final outcomes. I feel like they would work effectively in the real world. I would like people to see the work I have produced for this exhibition and acknowledge the famous movie characters and scene references with and without colour and hopefully this will show them just how much of a difference colour makes to everything we see. This should make them curious, intrigued and interested enough to attend the exhibition and learn more.
