Christmas Card - Reindeer Illustration

2016 Christmas Card - Reindeer Illustration

Illustrated with Adobe Draw on an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, sent to desktop apps for final edits in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The reindeer illustration is part of an ongoing series of zoo portraits.
The reindeer project began with a trip to the San Diego Zoo. I spent close to an hour photographing and watching the reindeer. They didn't do much besides lay there and look bored. I knew then that the reindeer portrait would require a little extra effort.
I wanted a horizontally formatted card design. That wasn't going to work with any of the photos I captured, because real reindeer antlers stand too tall and straight, so Photoshop to the rescue. I used Photoshop's warp tools to create a stylized reindeer with antlers that filled a horizontal space. I also gave him a bit of a smile with the liquify tool.
The composited reindeer image was synced to my Lightroom mobile collection to make it available for placement in Adobe Draw on my iPad. Lightroom sync makes images available in any Adobe mobile app without the need to export and transfer a jpeg.

I started by tracing the reindeer with a black marker type brush. Later I changed my mind about the ornament designs.
The text was hand lettered starting with pencil on paper. It took a lot of practice tries before I was happy with the style, especially with the capital letter 'M'. Graph paper helped me keep the letter sizes consistent.
The pencil letters were then traced with a brush tip Sharpie marker on tracing paper.
I scanned the marker drawings and saved the images to a CC Library. Using Adobe Capture on my iPad, I opened the text images and converted them to vector shapes which were saved back to a different CC Library.
The text shape was then placed and colored in the Reindeer Draw illustration. I duplicated the text layer several times, and used the eraser brush to create the effect of text wrapping around the antlers.
The snowflakes were drawn with iOrnament on the iPad, and then converted to vector shapes with Adobe Capture.
This is the completed  Draw illustration before it was sent to the desktop apps, with 20 individual draw layers on top of the photo image layer.
The background was created by placing snowflake shapes on separate layers with varied size, color and opacities.
Glow and shadow treatments were done in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. At this time Adobe Draw does not offer these effects.
Emboss effect was added to the text with Adobe Photoshop.
Thank you for looking.
