Little White Lies, Black Swan Issue (D&AD)

A response to a competition brief set by D&AD Student Awards 2012. The 'Illustration' category brief was to choose from a selection of this year's top five films and create your own unique cover for Little White Lies magazine.

Little White Lies magazine is "a bi-monthly, independent movie magazine that features cutting edge writing, illustration and photography to get under the skin of cinema." (Visit www.littlewhitelies.co.uk for more information.)

As a final year student at the University of Leeds we were asked to respond to a D&AD competition of our choice. I chose this specific category because of a passion for film and illustration. Out of the selection, I chose Black Swan as I was engrossed, engaged and very interested in the different themes of Darren Aronofsky's feature film. From these films I developed an illustration on the concept of a journey or a breakthrough from a innocent girl, trapped in a state of child-like innocence, into a deeply dark and disturbing character.

Hand drawn illustration using graphite, water colour paint and hand rendered typography using lipstick.
