This is how the rings are set up to solder. You want to make sure the ends meet very flush. 

Ring is being heated and the flux is turning clear.

A rawhide mallet is used to shape the ring after soldering.

Then a planishing hammer is used to make the faces even. 

After filing, sanding, polishing, and refining the ring is textured with a polished ball peen hammer.
