Fireplace tool series - Poker
Here you see the poker in progress next to the rod it was made from.
The handle was turned from walnut and then hand sanded up to 400.
Inspired by the Japanese wood preserving technique shou sugi ban, the walnut was charred and lightly sanded in layers finishing with a natural beeswax and oil finish. This really connects the handle with the use of the tool.
The end of the poker rod had one twist put into it where the handle ends. The handle was attached using a taper and epoxy for extra strength.
The hook was hand forged and brazed onto the main body. Brazing was chosen for aesthetic reasons over forge welding and will hold just fine under fireplace heat and normal use.
